What should you pay attention to when purchasing a power adapter?

Simply put, a power adapter is just a small transformer—but its internal structure differs significantly from that of a conventional transformer. Many people aren't aware of this, and they often wonder whether power adapters can actually charge our mobile devices or what they should pay attention to when making a purchase. Today, I’m going to share some insights on these topics with you.

I. Output Voltage

It’s best for the adapter’s output voltage to match exactly the voltage required by your laptop. If the voltages differ, they should be as close as possible to the laptop’s required voltage—ideally within a tolerance of no more than ±5%. This is because the voltage-regulating circuit inside most laptops is designed with a margin of safety. As long as the input voltage stays within a certain range, the laptop’s power supply will operate normally and stably. However, if the input voltage falls outside this range—particularly if it’s too low—the laptop may start to malfunction or operate unstably.

II. Output Current

The maximum output current should, if possible, match the high current required by the laptop. If they differ, the output current must be equal to or greater than the current demanded by the laptop. It’s important to note that the current must never be too low, as a current that’s too small can easily lead to unstable conditions such as screen flickering.

III. Interface

The output interface and polarity of the adapter are extremely important considerations. First, make sure that the adapter you purchase can actually be plugged into your laptop. Otherwise, even if all the operating parameters match perfectly, what good is it if you can’t plug it in at all?

Many major laptop manufacturers are independent, and adapters from different brands have varying connectors. Generally, adapters for different series within the same brand share the same connector specifications. However, occasionally, different brands may also adopt the same connector type. In each specific case, it’s essential to take a tailored approach.
